Who is on your Board?

Isn't it about time company stakeholders demanded that the boards of the company include a variety of individuals with different perspectives? Who is on your Board?

Recently, one of the purchasers of Facebook's IPO wanted Facebook to expand its Board from men to include women. Going a tad further, let's look at women in top management positions at Facebook and other companies.

The glass ceiling is not about women but about opportunity. Opening up doors to those opportunities is really the issue, not whether stakeholders should force the Board to appoint a woman just for the sake of appeasing a major stakeholder.

But, then again, how do we open those doors if the people choosing new members or management staff are in the "good old boys" network? What can be done to encourage broader participation if it is evident the network is closed to opportunities?

It would be in Facebook's best interests to examine its hiring policies and Board representation to include a variety of perspectives. It's not about doing what you are forced to do; it's about doing what is right without asking or being forced to comply.
